The Senate Committee on Women and Gender Equality reviewed the implementation of the tasks defined in the Program of Comprehensive Measures for the implementation of the Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030 in 2023, and the draft Program of comprehensive measures for its implementation in 2024. First, the work done in 2023 to ensure gender equality, increase the role of women in public and political life, and protect their legitimate rights was discussed.
It was noted that last year, in terms of improving the legislative framework, 13 normative legal acts were adopted (3 laws, 2 decrees and 2 presidential decrees and 6 Government resolutions) aimed at ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men. During the discussions, some issues that lag behind the implementation were critically discussed, and instructions were given to the relevant ministries and departments.
Thus, according to the Law "On Guarantees of Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men", the activities of the Advisory Council bodies on ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and Men are not organized at the proper level in State bodies. It was also determined that it is necessary to continue working to ensure the employment of women and their involvement in the field of entrepreneurship.
In addition, issues included in the program of comprehensive measures for the implementation of the Strategy in 2024 were discussed. The 2024 program includes issues such as improving the legislative framework aimed at ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men, increasing the political and legal potential of women in public service, increasing the proportion of women in STEM science (Science – natural sciences, Technology – technologies, Engineering – technical creativity, Mathematics – mathematics), formation of skills for the implementation of scientific and startup ideas of women, their involvement in scientific and innovative activities.
At the same time, such issues as strengthening the role of political parties in increasing women's political activity, increasing the political and legal potential of women in public service were highlighted.
It was emphasized that the Program of Comprehensive measures contributes to the implementation of national and international obligations (the Beijing Declaration and Plan of Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Sustainable Development Goals, etc.). Following the meeting, the relevant decision of the Committee was made.
